General:
Deciduous shrub, loosely branched, 1-2 m tall; stems erect to spreading, glabrous to soft-hairy and more or less stalked-glandular, unarmed; bark dark reddish-brown.
Leaves:
Alternate, rounded, deeply heart-shaped at the base, 3- to 5-lobed much less than half their length, the lobes rounded, coarsely-toothed, soft-hairy and stalked-glandular, 2-10 cm wide; stalks about equal to the blades, finely hairy and glandular.
Flowers:
Inflorescence of 4-16 flowers in an ascending to spreading raceme usually shorter than the leaves; flower stalks 2-3 mm long, jointed below the flowers, densely hairy and stalked-glandular; petals white or cream, broadly egg-shaped to oval, 2.5-4 mm long; hypanthium tubular to bell-shaped, 5-8 mm long; calyces greenish-yellow to yellowish-white, glabrous; styles glabrous, about equaling the stamens.
Fruits:
Berries, egg-shaped, deep bluish-black, 1-1.2 cm long, glabrous to stalked-glandular and more or less hairy.

Moist to dry woodlands and forest openings in the montane and subalpine zones; frequent in SC and SE BC; E to AB and S to CO, AZ, and CA.
